Project Summary
Building Equality in Architecture Toronto is a volunteer-run, grassroots organization founded in 2015 to promote equity for women in the architectural profession. Guided by the belief that empowering women improves and enriches the practice of architecture and our built environment, BEAT seeks to create opportunities for community building through advocacy, networking, and mentorship.
To mark their 10-year anniversary, BEAT was looking for an engaging way to share the organization’s story. Not everyone was aware of the organization’s origin, so we put together a short film that would capture both how it began and where it’s headed.
Filmed over two days in two locations, we opted for a documentary-style approach to ensure authenticity. It was important to us that in making the film accessible and engaging we didn’t “dumb down” the story. Through multiple pre-interviews and an intentional editing process, we were able to distill a clear and compelling narrative that respected the complexity of BEAT’s work.
Filmmaking is resource intensive, so we were careful to produce something with longevity. The mini doc was formatted for screens and social media to maximize its reach, and the narrative was crafted to be enduring—something that could speak just as clearly to audiences today as it will in years to come.
