WAYFINDING
The problem: make a building more easily navigable when the building’s tenants and spaces are constantly changing.
the solution: use colours and vinyl appliqués to distinguish spaces in a way that is easy to change in the future.
For the newly renovated University of Toronto Student Union (UTSU) building, we designed a visual wayfinding system to compliment existing braille and code-required signage. Working on a demanding budget in a dynamic building, it was decided early on that interchangeability and ease-of-use were top priorities. As part of the pre-design process, we held several successful consultation sessions with student union representatives and building tenants.
The renovated building located was retrofitted with coloured floors and elevator lobbies, with each level receiving a distinct colour treatment. Building on this theme, and in conjunction with existing brand assets developed for the UTSU, we designed a colour-coded wayfinding system that corresponded with the architecture.

Design
Key building amenities (lounges, washrooms, microwaves, etc.) were given pictogram stickers, which are used consistently across signage types. Vinyl appliqués are used throughout the building—serving as colourful placemaking elements that can be easily and inexpensively changed. Oversized “super” graphics are applied to washroom doors, elevators, and other key spaces to bring clarity to an otherwise complex building layout.
